The Last 6 months...

Since Landon's lip surgery, life has been normal and fun. Landon has developed a very cute personality. He loves to make faces at people and will smile for the camera. He's a bit of a mama's boy, and I'm enjoying that (mostly). He can hold his own bottle, is a champion sleeper, can wave bye-bye, dances to music and sometimes waves his arms up and down like he's leading the music. He's a turbo crawler and pulls up on everything. He's brightens our days and I just can't believe how the time has passed! Here is a picture of how his mouthpiece changed after lip surgery. They removed the "antennas" and made it much smaller. Also, he wore these nose stints at night for a while to keep his nostrils from collapsing. His palate surgery is coming soon so stay tuned for more info!

I had this onesie made that says, "Thank you Dr. G". We are so grateful to be under the care of such a skilled surgeon!

5 days after surgery:

This is the afternoon after getting his stitches removed:

Dr. G had to put a couple more dissolvable stitches in his lip. Landon got his arm free from his restriant during the night and have his lip a good whack!

His scabs are starting to come off:

Landon's Surgery

Landon's surgery 010

Thanks to everyone who was praying for Landon and us! We are so blessed. Landon did great in surgery and Dr. Genecov was able to do both sides of the lip – yay! I’m just so happy he doesn’t have to go through this again in six weeks. We got up at 4am on Thursday morning to go to the hospital and Landon was all smiles! He wasn’t allowed to have any food and he was still a happy baby! All the doctors and anesthesiologist met us before hand to answer any more of our questions and then, Gladys, the nurse, took Landon. We sent back our camera and they agreed to take some pictures. While in the waiting room, we met two other sets of parents who were also waiting for their children to be operated on (different conditions). There was a TV screen that showed the progress of each patient (a scalpel meant in surgery, stitches meant they were finishing up, and a band-aid meant all done). It seemed just minutes after I sat down that Dr. Hung, the ENT, came in and said he was all finished putting the tubes in Landon’s ears! Then it was only a couple more hours before Dr. Genecov came and got us. I don’t remember a lot of what he said at that time because I just wanted to see my baby. I was a little emotional when I saw Landon at first. He was just coming out of the anesthesia and kept twitching and turning his head side to side. He was pretty puffy and I did not recognize him. I had been told to expect a completely different look, but it took me by surprise how it hit me. Joseph explained it well, “We fell in love with the Landon that came into our lives with the cleft lip and that was the only way we knew him. Now that he’s changed (albeit for the better), it’s as if a part of him died and now we’re accepting this new look.” Once he was more awake I could see my sweet Landon in his eyes. I just rocked and sang to him and that seemed to soothe him. We stayed a few more hours and they said he was doing so well that we could go home that afternoon!

Now that it’s a few days after the fact, Landon is mostly back to his happy self. He’s even tried to break a couple of smiles through his new mouth but only the bottom lip curls out right now! He is very stuffed up and sounds like Darth Vader all of the time! Now that he has complete nostrils, they make more mucous, plus there are blood clots in them. It took him a couple days to get his appetite back but he is almost back up to eating his regular amount now. We started out feeding him through a syringe with a long tube, but now he’s graduated to a regular bottle that has a tube-like nipple. He wears no-no’s on his arms that keep them straight out so he can’t touch or bump his mouth and nose. I’ve mostly just been holding him day and night. Partly because he sleeps best in my arms (I can tilt his head back so he can breathe better) and also because I want him to feel super loved after going through something traumatic. I just love to study his new handsome face! I feel like these experiences have opened up my heart to a deeper kind of love; for him and my whole family.

Next Thursday he has to go back in the OR to have all the stitches removed and stints put in his nostrils. Just a week or two after that and he should be fully recovered. Palate surgery will take place at around 9 months. Thanks again to everyone for your prayers, calls, and especially to Grandma Dorothy for all of her help with Michael.

About Landon

Landon is in surgery as I write and I just want to jot down some things about him. He seriously is the best baby ever! Since birth he seemed to have a calm nature about him. From the start he seemed to respond so well to my voice and touch. He would turn his head to see where my voice was coming from, and a little patting and cuddling could calm him down. He ate like a champ and slept 3-4 hours at night. He was a textbook baby! Everyone always comments on his eyes and I never know if that's because they don't know how to react to his lip, but I do think he has very piercing eyes. It's like when he looks at you he sees into your soul. He didn't start smiling and communicating with his mouth until he was about 9 weeks old, but he could tell me everything through his eyes. Once he did start to smile, it was like he couldn't get enough of it. Just the sight of a friendly face would put him in a grin ear to ear and still does. He is such a smiley guy! And he talks. He has real conversations with inflections, various tones and great facial expressions. He always has a lot to talk about too, but he's a polite communicator. He'll wait for you to finish talking and then he'll take a turn cooing, telling you all about life no doubt. Then he'll stop and wait for a reply and begin his dialogue again. Conversations can go on for several minutes at a time! He also loves to sing. He went through a phase where, after being fed, would sit so contently for quite a while and just coo a soft song to himself. His melodies are soft and soothing. He loves to watch my mouth when I sing to him and sometimes he'll sing along. I haven't been able to catch it on camera, because he's always more interested in the camera when I pull it out in front of him. Landon just seems to enjoy life and what goes on around him. Michael loves to hug him and "play" toys with him (like pretending Landon's head is Mars and landing space ships on his head) and Landon just seems to enjoy every minute of it! Oh, did I mention he's a good sleeper? Since he was eight weeks old he's been sleeping twelve hours through the night!

We are so in love with our little Landon and feel so blessed that he was sent to our home! I feel that he will be an example to all of us through life.

Landon's Retainer

Here is a picture of Landon's mouthpiece (we call it his retainer). It gives him a temporary palate to aid in eating and the little antennas coming out stretch his nostrils up. This, along with taping down the lip, stretches the columella (the piece of skin in between the nostrils). We really have seen this device help shape his face for the first couple of months.
